Wine Spectator: 91 Points

Black cherry and plum fruit is shaded by tar and a hint of vanilla in this polished version. This starts out silky, with burly tannins taking over by the finish.

The single-vineyard 2007 Barolo Pernanno is quite a bit richer and darker than the regular Barolo. Espresso, mocha and plums are some of the nuances that emerge from the glass. The Pernanno sees 45-50% new oak. Despite its considerable body, it isn’t necessarily the better wine; personally I would prefer a glass of the Barolo. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017.

Good deep bright red. Very ripe currant and mocha aromas complemented but not overwhelmed by vanillin oak (this wine is aged in second-pass barriques). Big, round, rich and full; not a sharply delineated wine but fleshy, generous and sweet. Balsamic and licorice notes contribute to the impression of ripeness. Davide Mozzone's aim is to make two very different styles of Barolo.
